The Social Shift

The importance and impact of social media in our society today

Social media has proven to be a helpful asset in many different walks of life. While some might use it for recreation and enjoyment, others will harness the power of social networking for business and marketing purposes. No matter what you are using it for, the ultimate objective of social media remains consistent: to communicate.

Impact on Businesses and Marketing

Most of us already understand the importance of communication. Whether it is written, oral, or visual, communication is the single most important vessel for human collaboration. How else would we get anything done in this world?

Social media became a game-changer for communication. So long were the days of geographical barriers and time constraints. With online networking platforms, we humans could now collaborate more than ever. People from different continents working at the same company,  and immediate feedback from consumers are just two significant examples. These impacts allowed for remarkable growth among businesses and revolutionized how companies interact with their customers.

The Future of Social Media Marketing

Algorithms & User Targeting

A lurking trend in recent social networks includes something called an algorithm. These algorithms can specifically target users to primarily just see content they are interested in. Data for this is gathered by looking at what the user clicks on, interacts with, or searches. One of the most popular algorithmic-driven apps right now is TikTok. Its emphasis on short video content, and implementation of an infinite scroll has made it one of the most downloaded social media apps, surpassing 2 billion downloads. Because of its unique ability to make anyone’s content go “viral”

Who plays this game?

Both large and small corporations have gained immense popularity simply for their presence on TikTok. Examples of this can be seen from Duolingo, Chipotle, and even NFL team the Detroit Lions. All of these corporations are seen liking and commenting on the average user’s content, in addition to making their own. This type of engagement proves to work, as with increased views, comes boosted revenue.

Final Comments

I think it will take no time for most social networks to follow TikTok’s path. Instagram and Facebook have already implemented their version of TikTok’s model with “Reels” – short-form videos that feature music effects and filters. Businesses and marketers have recognized the value of going viral and reaching millions of targeted users effortlessly. This is no doubt the future of social networks and social media marketing.
