Networking As a Designer
Importance of Networking
Making it in the creative industry can be daunting. Even though we should be proud of the quality of our work as designers, it is essential to understand that when it comes to acquiring clients and jobs, it is not always what you know but who you know. Making connections can be a vital aspect of progressing in your career. However, if you need help understanding how people around you seem to make so many amazing connections, don't worry! You are not alone. There are some simple strategies that you can use to build your network faster than ever and secure that dream client or job.
Strategies
Social Networks
I'm sure many of you have already heard of LinkedIn, but it really is such a great tool! One of the most commonly used networking apps, LinkedIn boasts features like direct messages, job searches, skill endorsements, and alumni insights. Many people are active on LinkedIn and make connections with people that they wouldn't necessarily reach out to anywhere else. Be sure to stay active when your connections post:
"To make solid connections on LinkedIn, you must show some love to others' content! Comment, like and share your connections' posts so they know you're interested. This will help you build relationships" (Stan, 2023).
In my career journey, I have used LinkedIn to reach out to potential employers, professors, friends, and alums of my alma mater. Most of these connections have allowed me to get the jobs and clients I have today, and I am eager to continue growing this network.
Cold Outreach
Sometimes, you just have to reach out cold turkey. And that's okay! If your network is still in the beginning stages, reaching out to people at your dream company can be a great way to get your name out there. Even if you don't get a response, having your name in a recruiter's or potential employer's inbox can put you way ahead of other applicants. When it comes to cold reach, whether it be through socials, email, or in person, there is something noteworthy about putting yourself out there. The best thing about cold outreach is that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Collaborations
As a creative, there might be plenty of opportunities to collaborate with others in your field. Whether it be on a website project for a client or just to help with making a small design decision, collaborating with other designers is a great way to build connections. People love helping people. And people also love when others ask for their advice. Genuinely being interested in someone's professional opinion is a great way to build trust in collaboration.
Follow-ups
After connecting with someone whether it's a one-on-one meeting, event or online connection, following up is crucial to maintain and strengthen the relationship. Sending a follow-up message or email gives you the chance to express your gratitude for the interaction and keep the lines of communication open. Follow-ups are also important to keep in mind every once in a while, to maintain the connection.
"The key to maintaining a professional network, is to 'be in the orbit' of the people you're trying to cultivate so that, if you require their assistance down the road, you are still top of mind. The best way to do this is to take steps that demonstrate you care about the other person and that you're interested in his or her life" (Clark, Knight, 2016).
You wouldn't want someone to only reach out when they want something from you. This is where commenting /reposting other's posts, or even just messaging happy birthday, can be extremely beneficial to strengthening your network.
Conclusion
Networking is crucial in the design industry, offering opportunities beyond talent alone. Platforms like LinkedIn provide access to potential clients and job prospects while collaborating with peers fosters strong connections. It is vital to also remember consistent follow-ups in order to maintain relationships. By following these ideas, you can help ensure continued growth and success as a designer.
